The livelihoods to 130 to 270 million people in 81 countries, most of them in Africa, depend on artisanal and small-scale mining. In this session, we will discuss how artisanal and small-scale mining, a labor-intensive method of mineral extraction, shapes the development of the communities and countries where it takes place. Three main consequences of the mining activities will be presented: economic wealth, environmental degradation, and conflict risks.
