Diante de circunstâncias incompreensíveis ou irracionais, o ser humano contorna a obscuridade recorrendo ao uso de imagens, objetos, ficções ou estórias míticas. É uma forma de dar corpo ao indecifrável.

A natureza é generosa em todas as suas formas de vida - animal, vegetal ou mineral – e contem em si condições de possibilidade de entendimento dos seus mistérios. A cientificidade do modo artístico de se debruçar sobre ela, é o da expansão dos órgãos sensíveis ao conhecimento, da auscultação atenta, da implicação de todos os sentidos.

Hugo de Almeida Pinho é um observador atento, um esteta, um livre espeleologista. Transdisciplinarmente, o artista persegue a curiosidade ancestral de voltar ao coração, à anima, à vitalidade dos elementos, chegando assim aos sentidos ocultos que latejam sob narrativas míticas e mágicas.

A exposição Ônfalo abre-nos um trilho para uma descida encantatória até ao centro da Terra. Um corpo de imagens em película analógica, capturadas em condições extremas, revela passagens por grutas profundas que, como fissuras na realidade, são, para o observador, entradas para mundos onde as condições lumínicas e ambientais são próprias de outros modos de vida.

Grutas com aura de útero da Terra, de onde tudo nasce: entranhas minerais despertas, envolvidas num ambiente líquido e gasoso. Grutas, não de mão humana, mas santuários naturais onde outrora se escutavam mensagens do mundo espiritual, lugares da arte adivinhatória, da predição como manteía (mancia, sufixo grego que compõe todos os nomes da adivinhação).

Em Ônfalo, o mistério revela-se terreno fértil para a construção de uma ficção intemporal. À semelhança da obra monumental Mundus Subterraneus (1665), do jesuíta Athanasius Kircher SJ, quer dar-se continuidade, hoje, a uma pesquisa sobre o centro da terra – um umbigo do mundo (ônfalo), um centro geológico, político e simbólico.

Faced with incomprehensible or irrational circumstances, human beings try to navigate obscurity through images, objects, fictions, or mythical stories. It is a way of giving form to the undecipherable. 

Nature, generous in all its forms of life (animal, vegetal, mineral), harbours the very conditions for unlocking its mysteries. The scientific quality of the artistic approach to it lies in expanding the sensory organs of knowledge, in attentive listening, in the engagement of all the senses. 

Hugo de Almeida Pinho is a keen observer, an aesthete, a free speleologist. Working transdisciplinarily, the artist pursues the ancestral curiosity of returning to the heart, the anima, the vitality of the elements, thereby reaching the hidden meanings that pulse beneath mythical and magical narratives. 

The exhibition Ônfalo opens a path into an incantatory descent to the Earth’s core. A body of analogue film images, captured in extreme conditions, reveals journeys through deep caves which, like fissures in reality, appear to the viewer as entrances into worlds where lighting and environmental conditions belong to other ways of living. 

Caves with the aura of the Earth’s womb, the place of all origins: mineral entrails awakened, wrapped in liquid and gaseous environments. Caves not of human making, but instead natural sanctuaries where messages from the spiritual world were once heard, sites of divinatory art, of prophecy as manteía (mancia, the Greek suffix that underpins all the terms of divination). 

In Ônfalo, mystery becomes fertile ground for the construction of a timeless fiction. In the spirit of Jesuit Athanasius Kircher's monumental Mundus Subterraneus (1665), research continues today into the centre of the earth—a navel of the world (omphalos), a geological, political, and symbolic centre.
